Blk + Home Spotlight: Meet Michelle

© Amélie Pedrini

Hi Michelle!

We just LOVE Michelle Martell’s Canadian home!

We have always admired your home style. Tell the Homies about yourself!

I’m an interior designer with a passion for art and plants. Design was always in my life but it wasn’t until my late 40’s that I decided to go back to school and go for it. Finding one’s passion is a journey and i’m still pursuing mind. Having recently pivoted into the world of flowers and plants, it is a whole new world of discovery and growth. It’s a beautiful blend of my favorite things, design and nature.

What’s your home location?

We live in the city of Westmount, in the province of Québec, Canada

Do you buy or rent?

Type of Home

Condo/ Townhouse

How long have you lived in your home?

5 years

What’s your home’s square footage?

1900 SQF

Who do you share your home with (if anyone)?

My husband, our adult son and our beloved dog Atticus

How would you describe your home style, in a few words?

Our home is a Victorian House built in 1904. We love all the original details, plater moldings , high ceilings , extra wide baseboards and overall historic feel.

Who designed the interior of your home? (e.g. you, hired interior designer, virtual services)

Our home needed a full renovation from top to bottom. While my husband and I had a clear vision, we decided to collaborate with interiors design firms to help us bring our vision to life. Old homes come with their own specific challenges and getting help from experts was the best decision we made. As designers know, working on our own home can be a challenge as we become so emotionally invested, a collaboration was the perfect solution.

What do you love about your home?

Purchasing this home in the city was a huge step for us. We lived in our starter home in the suburbs for 20 years and loved it but it was time for a change. This home was our journey into the adventure that is downsizing. our previous was bigger and after 20 years, we had to let go of a lot of “stuff” and reevaluate how we live. This house was a clean slate and a fresh start. We loved the history of this home and made sure to preserve and respect it while renovating it.

What challenges have you faced obtaining or decorating your home (if any)?

The renovation was a 2 year adventure and it was filled with challenges. Once that was completed, decorating it was easy and fun.

What’s the blackest feature in your home 😉 ?

The artwork throughout our home is what makes it uniquely ours. Beautiful art from Black artists as well as representations of our people through scupltures, photographs , paintings, books and litterature can be found all over our home. That has always been very important to me. To see us represented in our home in the most beautiful way.

What’s on your at-home soundtrack?

I love this question !!! It is a mix of so many beautiful artists, old and new, from Yebba to Sade to Adele to Lenny Kravitz to Stevie Wonder to Snoh Aalegra to Fleetwood Mac, Soul II Soul, to Mulatu Astatke. Music is the language of the world that brings us all together.

What’s the most expensive purchase in your home?

Our stove is probably the most expensive item in our home. My husband was set on getting this gas stove from “Wolf” and It was a great choice. No regret.

Name some of your go-to places for home decor.

Rejuvenation, CB2, Must Société, West Elm,, Structube, Mobilia, Bois et Cuir, Zone,

What’s next for you in your home journey?

We are in the final stages of renovating our front steps and balcony. 2 years in the making, so we are excited! We are still downsizing and purging and finding ways to live with less. I’m even thinking about pairing down my plant collection. its a process.

Whats your one piece of advice for the B+H Homies that want to enhance their space?

I say this all the time, “a blank wall is an opportunity to tell the world who you are” so put something on those walls. It doesn’t have to be original art or expensive art. A greeting card that has meaning to you, a photograph, a clipping from a magazine or a map. Anyting looks gorgeous in a frame so don’t be afraid to decorate your walls, it has a huge impact. Mirrors are also a very easy way to add dept and dimension to your home. So go for it!
